Every now and then we find a really great product that blows us away with its simplicity and effectiveness. Cubelets are such a product. They are engaging beyond description and exactly what teachers need to teach robotics, design and engineering principles to students of all ages.

Cubelets are magnetic blocks that can be linked together to make an endless variety of robots with no programming and no wires. Students can build robots that drive around on a tabletop, respond to light, sound and temperature with surprisingly lifelike behaviour. Instead of programming that behaviour you simply snap the Cubelets together and watch the behaviour emerge like a flock of birds or a swarm of bees.

Each Cubelet has a tiny computer inside of it and is a robot in its own right. When you put Cubelets together you are actually making a robot out of several smaller robots. Each Cubelet communicates with its neighbours - if two Cubelets are next to each other, they are talking to each other.

They even have optional Lego® connectors so that students can extend the robots in multiple ways.

Of course, if students want to program Cubelets or use Smartphones or Tablets to control their creations they can do that too!

Students can even use the Sense Cubelets to sketch on iPads or even as Data Loggers.

Cubelets are simply the most versatile and easy to use educational resource for robotics that we have seen.

Each Cubelet has different equipment on-board and a different default behaviour. There are Sense Cubelets which act like our eyes and ears; they can sense light, sound and temperature and how far away they are from other objects. Just like with people, senses are the inputs to the system.

On the flip side, Action Cubelets act as Outputs. They do things. Some have little motors inside of them so that they can drive around or spin on one of their faces. There are Cubelets that make noise, shine a flashlight or display their information through a Light-up bar graph.

We have lesson plans and exercises for classes of all ages. For young students aged between four and six we have simple but engaging problems for them to solve like:

Someone keeps stealing your toys at night. Create a robot that will warn you when someone gets too close to your toys.

For older students there are fun challenges that teach creative design and engineering principles such as:

Design a robot with two senses and allow the robot to wander on a tabletop without falling off.

There is simply no end to the ideas that young minds will come up with and Cubelets allow them to explore what is possible within the laws of physics.

Cubelets are packaged in a sturdy carry case for use in multiple classrooms.
